Job description

Experienced Network Engineer for NYC WISP (MikroTik Routing Expert)

We are a fast-growing Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) based in New York City, seeking a Network Engineerwith at least 6 years of experience, specializing in MikroTik routing and network management. This is a full-time, on-site role, and candidates must be local to NYC.

Key ResponsibilitiesAdvanced Routing Protocols (OSPF, BGP, MPLS) for Scalability and Reliability

  • OSPF (Open Shortest Path First):
  • Design and implement multi-area OSPF networks to ensure efficient routing and rapid convergence.
  • Optimize network performance by creating hierarchical OSPF architectures with backbone areas and edge areas.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot OSPF adjacencies, route redistribution, and cost balancing for optimal traffic distribution.
  • BGP (Border Gateway Protocol):
  • Configure and manage BGP to handle multi-homed connections with upstream providers, ensuring redundancy and traffic balancing.
  • Implement advanced BGP features such as route aggregation, communities, and AS-path filtering for efficient traffic management.
  • Ensure high availability by integrating BGP with failover mechanisms and backup links.
  • MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching):
  • Deploy MPLS for streamlined packet forwarding and improved QoS across the WISP network.
  • Design and configure MPLS VPNs for isolating traffic between enterprise and residential customers.
  • Implement MPLS Traffic Engineering (TE) to optimize bandwidth usage and guarantee performance for high-priority traffic.
  • Policy-Based Routing (PBR):
  • Implement custom routing policies to direct traffic based on specific parameters such as source/destination IP, traffic type, or VLAN.
  • Configure PBR to prioritize critical applications, ensuring low latency for services like VoIP and streaming.
  • Redundancy and Failover:
  • Design and manage high-availability solutions, including redundant routing paths and automatic failover configurations.
  • Utilize VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) to maintain seamless network operations during router failures.

Core Network Design and Maintenance

  • Architect and maintain a robust and scalable WISP backbone using PtP and PtMP wireless technologies.
  • Oversee the integration and interoperability of MikroTik and Ubiquiti equipment in a hybrid network environment.
  • Manage core switches, routers, and firewalls to ensure optimal performance and security.

IP Address Management and Provisioning

  • Plan and implement efficient IP subnetting schemes for customer isolation and network scalability.
  • Automate IP address provisioning and RADIUS-based authentication for seamless customer onboarding.

Traffic Management and QoS

  • Configure MikroTik Queue Trees for precise traffic shaping and bandwidth allocation.
  • Ensure high-priority traffic (e.g., VoIP, video streaming) receives guaranteed bandwidth through QoS policies.

Monitoring and Troubleshooting

  • Use tools like Zabbix, The Dude, and PRTG for real-time network monitoring and diagnostics.
  • Troubleshoot complex routing issues, identify bottlenecks, and implement performance improvements.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of network configurations, routing policies, and failover mechanisms.

Security and Compliance

  • Harden network security by implementing MikroTik firewalls, DDoS protection, and access control policies.
  • Regularly update firmware and software across all devices to maintain compliance with industry standards.

Requirements

  • Experience:
  • Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience with MikroTik RouterOS and advanced routing protocols.
  • Proven expertise in configuring and managing OSPF, BGP, and MPLS for scalable and reliable networks.
  • Strong background in designing and managing WISP networks, including PtP and PtMP systems.
  • Technical Expertise:
  • Advanced knowledge of VLAN management, QoS, and traffic shaping.
  • Proficiency with RADIUS-based provisioning and network automation.
  • Familiarity with Ubiquiti hardware and its integration with MikroTik infrastructure.
  • Physical and Operational Requirements:
  • Comfortable lifting up to 40 lbs and using power tools for installations and maintenance.
  • Ability to drive a commercial van and work on-site as needed.
  • Must be based in NYC with a valid NYC driver’s license.
  • Professional Skills:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration and customer interactions.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
